Job Purpose

The CoSE IT Senior Systems Administrator will be based in China working for the James Watt School of Engineering’s Transnational Education partner institution Glasgow College UESTC which has campuses in Chengdu and Hainan. The post holder will be located in Chengdu however some travel will be required to support activities in the Hainan campus.


Working as part of a small local IT team, the post holder will report to the Infrastructure Team Lead based in the UK and to the relevant local manager to provide expert IT support to a range of academic and support staff, undergraduate and postgraduate students, and fly-in/fly-out academic staff who attend the Chinese campuses on a rolling basis for their teaching and research typically using Windows laptops and MacBooks.


Managing a full range of IT activity and issues affecting software and hardware used for teaching and projects, the post holder will be recognised as an IT systems expert, liaising with their direct team members based in China, the CoSE IT team based in Glasgow and UESTC IT team in China to provide an effective IT service.


Main Duties and Responsibilities

1. Provide a range of IT technical support to staff, students and visitors to the campus who use IT Services that are managed by University of Glasgow (UofG), including the use of IT and/or AV facilities but excluding the core infrastructure which is managed by the campus management team.

2. Management of the computing labs daily. Independently manage and deliver a range of IT support activities using specialist technical expertise, ensuring all issues are resolved in a timely manner.

3. Troubleshoot complex technical issues and provide expert technical guidance to suggest, evaluate and implement improvements to Standard Operating Protocols. Diagnose and rectify faults/problems with IT equipment, working to safe, professional standards and minimise downtime for users liaising with other service providers both on and off campus as required.

4. Manage the provisions within teaching labs, inclusive of plans for essential lab upgrades and seek to continuously improve the technical service.

5. Responsible for full setup, install and configure computer systems and associated IT peripherals, and connect to the UESTC campus network as required, ensuring compliance with university procedures.

6. Managing the consumables budget for the campus, determining stock levels of IT equipment, and identifying and advising on equipment specifications for staff and postgraduate researchers. This includes external relationship building with suppliers and managing the logistics of purchases.

7. Use the Campus Helpdesk system to assist in logging, monitoring, and recording the resolution of IT issues and where appropriate assigning appropriate tasks to team members.

8. Maintain and update records of computer users, IT equipment, system configurations and software licenses in various databases.

9. Maintain and develop any local servers, both virtual and physical, supporting file-storage, software licensing, and backups.

10. Monitor the health of systems and install security and feature upgrades as required in a timely manner.

11. Managing and prioritising own workload to ensure jobs are completed in an efficient manner, and in line with any Service Level Agreement in place.

12. Liaising with local vendors and contractors working on site.

13. Support for students, including running of teaching / workshops on specialist programming.

14.  Any other duties and projects which may from time to time be required by the CoSE IT Infrastructure Lead or CoSE IT Laboratory Manager (Chengdu) (UESTC).


 Job Requirement

Knowledge/Qualifications

Essential

A1 Either: Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills in a similar role. 

Or: Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 8 (Scottish Vocational Qualification level 4, Higher National Diploma) or equivalent, and experience of personal development in a similar role.

A2 A demonstrable breadth and depth of knowledge and experience of working with Windows and Linux systems in a heterogeneous networked environment.

A3 Knowledge of information security in the end user computing environment.

A4 Excellent knowledge of desktop computing, storage, benchwork, networking, and associated troubleshooting e.g. debugging, interpreting system logs etc.


Desirable

B1 Knowledge of computing hardware including trends in hardware development, e.g. CPUs, graphics cards, motherboards, add-in cards and integration with other hardware.

Essential

C1 Fluency in both English and Chinese.

C2 Excellent interpersonal skills, able to provide a high standard of customer care with a positive and helpful attitude in responding to enquiries.

C3 Proven strong organisational and time management skills.

Experience

Essential

E1 Broad practical experience of supporting end user computer systems and servers running a range of operating systems and software.

E2 Experience working in a front-line IT Support environment.

E3 Experience of working with a job management system.

E4 Experience installing operating systems and end user software.

E5 Experience of deploying and upgrading computing hardware.

E5 Experience of accurate and clear logging of issues to ensure transfer of information to colleagues can be dealt with swiftly.


Desirable

F1 Experience of working with scripting languages.

F2 Experience of working with cloud services

F3 Experience supporting network services, user, and storage management e.g. backup, Active Directory, DNS (Domain Name Service), DHCP, VPN (Virtual Private Network), virtualisation technology, SCCM, JAMF.

F4 Experience with other operating systems e.g. iOS, Android, Raspian.
